TCMR was founded because we felt Telford and its surrounding areas were not being served well by existing radio operators.

In 1999Telford FM came along, but it was sold to a company that owns lots of other radio stations and eventually became part of the Greatest Hits network and therefore had little or no local content. We felt it was time for Telford to have its own radio station again, but the chances of bidding against the incumbent to get an FM license would have been prohibitively expensive.

When Ofcom announced that there was to be a DAB Multiplex (transmitter) to serve Telford and Shrewsbury in meant there was, at last, an opportunity for Telford to have its own radio station again, so Telford Community Radio CIC was set up in mid-2025. It’s a ‘Community Interest Company’, registered at Companies House.

The company duly went through the application process and were subsequently awarded a license and decided to call the station TCMR. In our application we stressed that we would serve the community in several ways. We said would strive to present programmes that would inform and entertain its listeners, support individual communities within Telford and its surrounding areas and villages and would offer local businesses an affordable way to advertise their goods and services.

We also said we would produce a series of features on the history of Telford, so “Telford – A Town Built On History” will be an integral part of our output. To be heard five times each day, individual features focus on all kinds of topics, mining, canals, famous people from the area, lost railways, lost cinemas, the history of the towns that were here long before Telford was even thought of.
